Aikido Three teachings of Master Takaichi Sayanagi  仜 崌婥摴敧敠昹摴応

"Master Takaichi Sayanagi's Aikido was something no one could imitate."
"I was attracted by Master Sayanagi's Aikido, which was something no one could imitate."
"I admired his technique which was profound and graceful."
"I adored his technique which was gentle and generous."
"I think his technique was the result of his training and it was full of implications."

Master Takaichi Sayanagi said in an interview with the Kochi Shimbun Newspaper (January 18, 1998),
http://wwwc.pikara.ne.jp/koshimizu1541/newpage11.htm
"When I was a secretary of Kochi District Prosecutors' Office at the age of 28, I visited Aikikai Dojo (practice hall) in Tokyo and I was taught by Great Master Morihei Ueshiba. Rolling over and over, during the practice I was thrown on the tatami easily and comically whenever he pleased. But I didn't feel angry at all. It was as if I were thrown wrapped in floss. In this way, he didn't throw me but led me to be thrown. His teaching was the perfection of martial arts."

In 1960, Master Sayanagi founded Aikido Dojo in Kochi, for the first time in Shikoku. After that, it happened that he was able to catch a criminal in the downtown area and this led him to leave his job at the age of 48 and to choose teaching Aikido as his principal occupation. He said, "When I caught that criminal acting violently, I wondered why I was able to do so although 'I had no particular intentions.' I think I threw his mind first, secondly I naturally fell him by physical strength. Then I realized that Aikido has a deep essence and I wanted to do my best to spread it."

I suppose that Master Sayanagi strongly sought the techniques such as "Try to throw an opponent's mind by your body." and "Lead the opponent's mind by using the strength of the mind."
I think that having studied and practiced Aikido directly received from the founder Morihei Ueshiba for a long time, he was clearly able to teach us three great principles with plain explanations.

1. Don't strive to win, but just not to lose.

1. Don't try to throw your opponent, but to let the opponent be thrown.

1. The opponent's mind is held in your palm and played as if it were a die, without consciously trying to fight. (Remarks of the Founder Ueshiba)

I would like to practice more and spread the Aikido taught to us by Master Sayanagi.
This selection of three great techniques of Master Sayanagi was a result of the homepage we set up hoping to transmit "the Techniques and Spirit" of Master Sayanagi to the world.
It is a pleasure to be able to publish "Three Great Teachings" of Master Sayanagi Takaichi and transmit the techniques taught by him.乮2003/05/14乯
It was a great achievement first of all.
I will strive to develop this martial art, Aikido.
